Reference basis

Sources and Calculation Assumptions

The measurement standards, soil-density principles, horticultural references and assumption hierarchy behind the calculators.

Measurement and unit conversions

Length and volume conversions are aligned with National Institute of Standards and Technology guidance. Important internal factors include 1 inch = 0.0254 metre, 1 foot = 0.3048 metre, 1 cubic foot = 0.028316846592 cubic metre and 1 cubic yard = 0.764554857984 cubic metre.

Soil density and compaction

The weight calculator is informed by the physical principle that bulk density is soil dry mass divided by total volume, and that texture, organic matter, pore space, moisture and compaction affect the relationship. The site uses selectable planning assumptions rather than presenting one permanent weight per cubic yard.

Project-depth guidance

Depth recommendations on the site are presented as planning ranges or decision guidance, not universal horticultural prescriptions. Local soil condition, drainage, plant selection and construction specification should govern the project. Soil testing may be appropriate where quality or amendments matter.

Assumption hierarchy

  1. Use the site’s exact geometric and unit conversions.
  2. Replace generic density, price and payload assumptions with supplier or vehicle data.
  3. Replace generic depth suggestions with project specifications or local expert guidance.
  4. Confirm the final order unit and increment with the seller.

Update policy

References are reviewed when calculation logic changes, when a source becomes unavailable or when updated official guidance materially affects an assumption. A source does not imply endorsement of this website.
