Compare the complete delivered project, not only the unit price
Bulk topsoil often has a lower price per unit of volume, while bags offer control and convenience. The cheaper option depends on total volume, delivery charges, minimum order, vehicle access, handling labour, waste and the value of unused material.
| Factor | Bagged topsoil | Bulk topsoil |
|---|---|---|
| Small quantities | Often practical | Minimum order may dominate cost |
| Delivery | Store collection or parcel delivery | Usually tipped by truck |
| Handling | Portable but repetitive | Efficient with barrows or machinery |
| Quantity control | Whole bags | Supplier increments and load size |
| Storage | Contained until opened | Requires a suitable drop area |
| Price comparison | Convert bag volume to cost per cubic unit | Add delivery, tax and surcharges |
Convert both offers to the same unit
A 40-litre bag and a cubic-yard bulk price cannot be compared directly. Convert both options to cost per cubic metre or cost per cubic yard, then add all charges. The Cost Calculator performs this normalization using the prices you enter.
Access can reverse the apparent saving
A bulk load tipped far from the project may require more labour than bags placed near the work. Conversely, carrying dozens of bags can be slower and more expensive than moving one bulk pile. Plan where the truck can stop, where the soil can be tipped and how it will reach the final area.
Quality must also be comparable
Two products called “topsoil” may differ in screening, texture, organic matter, contamination risk and consistency. Price comparison is meaningful only when the materials are suitable for the same use.
