There is no single fixed weight. Dry screened soil may be much lighter than wet or clay-rich soil, so the calculator uses a stated density assumption and range.
Load planning tool
Topsoil Weight Calculator
Estimate topsoil weight in pounds, kilograms, US tons and metric tonnes using volume, soil condition and a transparent density assumption.
Estimate soil load weight
Moisture and compaction create a range, not one fixed conversion.
Enter the project details and calculate.
Density range
Topsoil volume does not have one fixed weight
Water content, clay, sand, stones, organic matter and compaction all change density. The calculator uses transparent planning assumptions rather than a false universal conversion.
Dry and loose
Dry screened material is usually lighter because pore space contains more air and less water.
Moist or compacted
Moisture and compaction increase mass within the same nominal volume. Rain before collection can change the practical transport decision.
Custom density
Use supplier data when available. A measured or declared density is more useful than a general internet average.
Transport safety
Payload is different from towing capacity and load-bed volume
A vehicle may have enough physical space for soil while exceeding its legal or mechanical payload. Weight is the controlling limit.
Minimum load estimate
The calculator divides estimated soil mass by the payload you enter and rounds up. It does not assess axle distribution, trailer ratings or local transport law.
Estimated soil weight ÷ legal payload = minimum loadsFinal verification
Use the supplier weighbridge for transport decisions
The calculator is useful before ordering, but a weighbridge or supplier load ticket is the stronger source when the exact delivered material is known.
Frequently asked questions
Topsoil weight calculator questions
That depends on actual soil weight and the pickup’s legal payload. Bed volume alone is not enough to make the decision.
Yes. Added water can materially increase the mass of the same soil volume.
Supplier data is best. Otherwise choose the condition that most closely matches the material and treat the output as a planning estimate.
